Kunal Kapoor is okay with his sex symbol tag

Kunal KapoorJust two films old and Kunal Kapoor is no hurry to get into a signing spree. That would explain him signing just two films after Rang De Basanti. “I have signed only two films, one by Milan Luthria and the other by Sajid Nadiadwala. I will do a film only if it really excites me,” he says.

Needless to say, after his performance in Rang De Basanti he has been getting several offers. “Post- RDB, everyone wanted me to play a Jehadi or a poet. Thankfully that changed gradually and now I am being offered roles ranging from action to comedy,” says Kunal.

Meanwhile, he is excited about working with Luthria in Hat Trick. “The plot of the film really impressed me. Besides, Milan is a talented director and I have always wanted to work with him,” says Kunal. “It’s also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of a film that has actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Hema Malini, Nana Patekar and Paresh Rawal. Likewise, working with Sajid also gives me a big high. It is gratifying to know that he has confidence in a newcomer like me.”

Has the industry changed its attitude towards him after Rang De Basanti? “At the end of the day, filmmaking is a business, and I understand that,” he says. “After Meenakshi failed, people didn’t approach me with offers. I do not grudge them this. If your films do well, people will come to you, if they flop, they won’t. There is no point in taking these things personally. I’d rather divert my energies towards my work.” Does being burdened with a sex symbol tag pressurise him? “I am only concerned about my own expectations, which are very high,” he says. “The sex symbol tag is okay with me as long as it gets me work. But I really don’t understand how a person who plays a character like Aslam in a film like RDB becomes a sex symbol.” So, is there a film with Karan Johar or Rakyesh Mehra in the pipeline, as rumoured? “No comments,” he says. Evidently the guy has learnt to play it safe already.
