What the Bollywood stars want in 2008

Saif Ali Khan: To never smoke again, be extremely regular with my workouts, make more time for those I love, to stay focussed on my work and to make sure I enjoy what I do.

Sonam Kapoor: The death of my Nanaji at the end of the year made me realise how urgently I need to spend time with my family. And since my Nanaji would always joke about my lack of a boyfriend, maybe I need to get one of those into my life. Where can I order one?

Preity Zinta: 2007 was professionally stressful. I did some of my most complex characters and at the end of the year, I really needed a break. Now, in 2008, I will do some fun roles. I want to let my hair down.

Bipasha Basu: In 2008 I want to be fitter and healthier. I also want some more interesting work to come my way. And I want to travel a lot more in my free time.

Urmila Matondkar: Why make New Year resolutions? I learn from my mistakes throughout the year.

Kangana Ranaut: In 2008 I want to find love… but not the way you’d think. I want to find it within myself. I want to get to love myself so I can be a better person for myself and for others.

Malaika Arora: Oh, I make New Year resolutions religiously every year and break them throughout the year; 2008 will be no exception.

Dino Morea: I seriously don’t look at the whole year. I take it a day at a time. I see every day as struggle to do the right thing. So I guess in 2008 I’ll be struggling even more.

Upen Patel: In 2008 I want to be a good human being. And I want to get love back into my life.

Riteish Deshmukh: I want to become more energy-conscious and save on electricity wherever I can.

Arshad Warsi: I’m really going to start looking after myself. And I want to work even harder on my films. No more supporting roles for me. I’ll now support myself.

Koena Mitra : I don’t like to restrict myself to resolutions. So in 2008 I want to be even more spontaneous. I want to follow my heart wherever it takes me. I want to make mistakes, so I can learn from them, I want life to be full of surprises, unpredictable and adventurous.

Tusshar Kapoor: I want to get as physically fit as I can. And I’ve promised myself a holiday this year.

Raima Sen: I really need to get more regular about my work-outs. And I need to get more decisive this year. Too much of giving in just to be polite.

Manoj Bajpai: After 18 years of smoking, I’ve decided to kick the habit.

Amrita Arora: I know being bad is good. But I want to be a better person in 2008. I want to kick my habitual impatience and work much harder than I did in 2007.

Simi Garewal: I want to speak more Hindi as I’m going to be doing more Hindi shows on television.

Bollywood’s biggest non stories of 2007

Bollywood’s sexiest jodi - John Abraham and Bipasha Basu - broke off and went their separate ways. Rani Mukerji got engaged to Aditya Chopra and then married him at the Umaid Bhawan, and the couple lived happily ever after. Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif got hitched too. In fact, to prove a point to Abhishek -Aishwarya, Sallu-Kat got married the day before the Abhiash wedding. And of course, Shilpa Shetty is the next Bond girl, Kunal Kapoor has changed his ways and is seeing Konkona Sen S h a r m a, Dia Mirza and Minnisha Lamba, Preity Zinta committed suicide and Shilpa’s wax model was placed at Tussauds. Phew!

2007 certainly has been the year of non-stories. Each issue has been made into a non-issue and blown out of proportion. Katrina was shocked to hear she was getting married to Salman. “Why can’t people leave me alone? I have a family to take care of. While I was in South Africa and Dubai shooting for different films, people back home had planned my marriage. Hello?” she said. T he elusive Rani had to come out in the open to clarify that she wasn’t getting married. “I would’ve gotten married at Umaid Bhawan if I could afford that place,” Rani had said. Tell Jiah Khan that she is Aamir Khan’s half-sister and she snaps, “I don’t even want to rubbish that bit because it is so bad. I wouldn’t have reacted if I hadn’t known that my mother was getting affected,” she rued. Kim Sharma and Vivek Oberoi simply chose not to react to the news that was doing the rounds about them. Apparently, they were canoodling onboard an airplane. Ask PZ why she ‘committed suicide’ and she breaks into laughter. “I’d like people to know that I’m brave and will not chicken out by committing suicide. I’m a fighter - I’d rather kill than take my own life,” she joked.

And John sums it up, “This is just loose talk!” Well, that seems to be the last word!

Top 100 songs of 2007

Dard-e-Disco, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Nagada Nagada… have been the hit tracks you’ve practically woken up to each day in 2007, thanks to Radio Mirchi! Be it your daily commute or your cooking session at home - radio has been there offering the choicest and uber cool music always. And with so much music in our lives, countdown compilations like Radio Mirchi’s Top 100 songs of 2007 are a musthave to know what to download on your iPods, mobile phones and to know what to hum! Explains Tapas Sen, chief programming officer, Radio Mirchi, “Industry standards are set on the basis of our compilations. We have a great business-to-consumer equation, and through such compilations, we ensure that we have a rocking business-to-business equation too.

It is interesting to note that music directors, songwriters and singers actually follow our compilations to know what is hot or thanda on the music scene.” Sen adds that the procedure involved in selecting a song to be a part of any compilation is exhaustive, “A panel of experts in Mirchi critique the songs. What is popular on various channels on the telly, the over-the-counter sales figures of albums and what listeners have been continuously requesting on the radio are other parameters involved. In a nutshell, the list is a meticulous compilation and the subjectivity factor is pretty high.” So, what have been the big music trends in 2007? Says Tapas, “2007 has been the year of new trends in music. Melody has made a huge comeback and has taken the front seat. Fiercely individualistic lyrics are huge hits with our target audience. It’s more like ‘my music’ and I’d like to mention Gulzar here, who said that he is the best nonsensical songwriter. Songs like Beedi, Billo Rani and Dard-e-Disco are good examples to support this trend. Indi-pop has been inclined towards melody too. New music directors like Monty and Pritam have burst on to the music scene with Saawariya and Life in a… Metro respectively.”

Top Of The Charts

1. Dard-e-Disco - OSO
2. In Dino Life in a… - Metro
3. Saawariya - Title
4. Doorie (House Mix) - Atif Aslam
5. Salaam-e-Ishq - Title

Star paintings: gimmick or art?

Salman KhanWhat’s common between Salman Khan, Sushmita Sen, Katrina Kaif, Preity Zinta, Twinkle Khanna, Deepti Naval, Suchitra Krishnamoorthy, Gurinder Chaddha, Ayesha Takia, Dia Mirza and, now, Abhishek Bachchan? Other than them being from Bollywood, they’ve all been splashing their skills on canvas. And it’s not just for fun - Salman Khan and Suchitra Krishnamoorthy have put their works up for sale.

Responses to the trend have been varied. “Isn’t Bollywood lucrative any more?” asks Yusuf Arakkal. The Bangalore-based painter has seen actress Deepti Naval’s paintings, but didn’t find them exceptional. “She manages her canvas well, but her paintings aren’t great. Still, from what I know, even her paintings sell for Rs 4-5 lakh. A Jogen Choudhury painting doesn’t sell for more than Rs 30 lakh, far less than what Salman Khan has been getting for his work,” he says.

Bollywood stars are definitely taking the focus away from professional artists. While struggling artists trying to make it big may consider it a matter of concern, established artists aren’t insecure. Explains art critic Ranjit Hoskote, “This is a trend framed for media consumption. Art has become fashionable now. But artists don’t need to be threatened since film stars and painters are two different segments in a very large media. Besides, there’s enough space in the economy to accommodate the works of both.”

There’s no doubt, though, that a star signature adds to the value of these works. So who’s buying them? Art experts and curators say it’s mainly foreign investors like wealthy NRIs and people from the film industry.

But not everyone is enamoured of Bollywood’s brush with art. Anju Sehgal, curator and wife of singer Baba Sehgal, says she isn’t mesmerised by star paintings. “I’ll never buy their work. The problem in India is there are no standards for anything. So even a Salman Khan painting sells for Rs 1 crore. But hiking the prices of celeb art discourages new art collectors and artists. They feel that if Salman is selling for that much, a Jogen Choudhury must be selling for more and, consequently, back out of buying. If these canvases are used to raise funds for a cause, the price is justified. Otherwise there shouldn’t be so much hype around this trend,” she feels.

Art experts concede that painting, like cinema, is a way of self-expression and anyone can try their hand at it. But if they’re putting it up for public consumption, they must be serious. While some, like Deepti Naval and Suchitra Krishnamoorthy, have had training, most stars treat it as a spare time activity. Suchitra, who was trained by artist Anil Nayak, says she probably started this latest spurt in stars taking to art, and adds it’s now a mainstream career for her. But she doesn’t agree that stardom makes it easier to establish a reputation in art. “The art world is genteel and well-informed. People won’t buy work if it’s not genuinely good. In fact, people from the glam industry are not taken seriously and have to work harder to be accepted. I’m all for film stars wielding the brush,” she says.

Will ‘Speed’ break the jinx for Vikram?

Speed MovieAfter 10 flops in a row, this film could well restore the versatile director on the fast track

Once upon a time Vikram Bhatt made a mark with whatever he attempted. ‘Fareb’ (adulterous drama), ‘Ghulam’ (action social), ‘Kasoor’ (courtroom drama), ‘Raaz’ (musical horror) and ‘Aawara Paagal Deewana’ (action comedy) traversed genres and proved to be blockbusters.

Then began a bad phase for Bhatt, who delivered 10 duds back to back. With his last success being ‘Aawara Paagal Deewana’ (2002), it has been nothing short of a harrowing five years for him since he enjoyed a hit.

His ‘Speed’ is releasing on September 28, without any fanfare and after taking two years to complete. Inspired by the Hollywood hit ‘Cellular’, the film stars Urmila Matondkar in a central role with Zayed Khan playing her saviour. Sophie Chaudhary, who adds to the glamour quotient says, “Regardless of the film’s delay, ‘Speed’ will remain close to my heart.”

One wonders if audiences share the same sentiments for this thriller that has Aftab Shivdasani as a villain with Tanushree Dutta and Amrita Arora painting a pretty picture.

Bhatt’s earlier film ‘Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage’ (2002) was hardly an event though it involved the coming together of Hrithik Roshan and Amisha Patel after ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’ whereas ‘Footpath’ (2003), Emraan Hashmi’s debut film failed too. ‘Inteha’ (2003), Ashmit Patel’s debut film was a badly made film but ‘Aetbaar’ (2004) came as a shock in spite of the heavyweight presence of Amitabh Bachchan along with real life couple John Abraham and Bipasha Basu.

Much before Ram Gopal Varma decided to remake ‘Sholay’, Vikram Bhatt attempted an ode to the classic with his ‘Elaan’ (2005). This Mithun Chakraborty comeback as Gabbar too failed. ‘Jurm’ (2005) seemed like a childish thriller adding to the tally of Bobby Deol’s flops.

Comparatively, Akshay Kumar’s ‘Deewane Huye Paagal’ (2005) managed to just about break even, but ‘Ankahee’ (2006), one of Bhatt’s best efforts, was a disaster. Bhatt had even quoted before the film’s release, “Even if ‘Ankahee’ breaks even, I would be happy.” The collections were quite depressing though.

The year 2007 has been particularly unkind to Bhatt with his erotic thriller ‘Red’ making his distributors see red. But the biggest blow came with ‘Life Mein Kabhie Kabhie’, one of Bhatt’s most sensitive films. On it’s dismal show, he had commented, “We went completely wrong with the promotion. People confused it between a serious film and a campus comedy. The fact is it was neither.” Later, his horror film ‘Fear’ had to bear an aftermath of Bhatt’s bad run. After being in the cans for months, it had to see a quiet DVD and internet release. Will ‘Speed’ break the jinx for the director? Sanjay Suri, who features in ‘Speed’ says, “The film is an-edge-of-the-seat thriller. Sadly, there have been number of speed breakers in the making. I’m now happy that ‘Speed’ is finally releasing.”

Tanisha and Uday Chopra are no longer a couple

Tanisha and Uday ChopraEven as the rumour mills are churning out reports of Neal N Nikki couple, Tanisha and Uday Chopra’s engagement, news is that the two have, in fact, split.

Our source reveals, “It’s rather sad that they have parted ways as they were planning to get engaged sometime soon. But this break-up took place after she got back from Goa recently.”

When contacted, Tanisha chose not to discuss the subject with us, but did not deny the news either. When questioned about her break-up with Uday, she paused for a moment, before replying, “Work has hit me hard and now I’m going all out doing good films. My relationship is a personal matter which I don’t want to talk about at this point in time. Right now, I’m busy with a number of films that I am looking forward to.”

Apparently, things soured between the two because of disagreements about her career. Our source says, “Tanisha and Uday would have endless arguments. Tanisha has been on a signing spree while Uday isn’t. She was out of town for a while, busy shooting for Kumar Mangat’s 123 in Pondicherry and Goa. She got back from her shoot to experience more trouble back home. Apparently, Uday wants more time from her, but Tanisha wants to work on the maximum number of films she can, right now.”
It’s great to see her back in action, but what was the long sabbatical all about? Tanisha says, “I wanted to work with good filmmakers and do better films. But after my last film, I was not happy with the kind of offers I was getting. The roles that were offered to me were rather boring. I decided to take a break till I got quality films.”

And her wait has paid off. Says Tanisha, “I am excited about the films I have signed. There is Kumar Mangat’s big project, apart from 123, another project is in the pipeline and of course, Sarkar Raj where it’s not Ash but me opposite Abhishek, playing a significant role.”

Fans can catch their favorite stars on Facebook now

When they are not facing the camera, a bunch of Bollywood men and women including Aamir Khan and Priyanka Chopra stuff their stockings, write sticky notes, bitch-slap and throw food on their friends on a popular social networking website called Facebook.

Primarily focused on high school to college students, the social network on the web has now caught the imagination of our reasonably computer literate filmy janta. For starters, Facebook was founded by former Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg as part of his hobby projects. Later, when it was well received by fellow students, the website was formally launched in February 2004. The core service is free and has now users across all English-speaking countries.

Most of our actors have graduated from the humble social network Orkut to Facebook. While on Orkut most of them complained about lack of privacy, as all Orkut users have access to profiles and scrapbooks of their fellow users. As a result they faced a deluge of scraps (or messages) from fans and sceptics alike. Says Gul Panag, “When I was on Orkut a friend recommended Facebook as it is a relatively private site where only listed friends can access your profile details.” However, Gul is yet to upload pictures on her website, as she is not yet acquainted with the functions, “I’m not too familiar with the website and there are just too many application tools.”

However, filmmaker Kunal Kohli feels that Facebook is one of the most user-friendly websites. Kohli was intrigued when assistant directors at his office kept raving and ranting about the website every morning. Kohli, who is just a month old on Facebook says, “All my assistant directors were on it. I was too curious and wanted to open an account. I got up and about on the website in no time. My usage level is approaching the addiction stage.”

For people like Kohli, Facebook is almost a personal website as users post their articles, pictures, videos, reading list, movie guide and music album on the website. Says Kohli, “Ever since I have logged on to Facebook people have stopped sending emails. They prefer posting messages on my wall. For me it is as good as my personal website.”

Nevertheless, one can’t ignore the networking side to it. Long lost friends and acquaintances have surfaced for many users. Gul Panag, who had given up hopes on finding her high school best friend, says: “The other day, I found my long lost high school, Brit friend. We went to the International School of Lusaka in Zambia.”

Homi Adajania (of Being Cyrus fame), however, argues that it’s more of a time-killing exercise (of course, if you have too much to spare). He says, “It’s pure time pass. I check it whenever I’m bored.” He further adds, “But I have found a lot of old Armenian rugby players who I haven’t met for over 15 years on the website.”

South Indian stars come together to celebrate success

The 54th Annual Filmfare Awards (South) was a star-spangled night attended by the biggest and brightest names from Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam films. The event, held at the Hyderabad International Convention Center last Saturday, lived up to its reputation. The razzmatazz of the movie industry was evident - an elaborate stage, lights, cameras and loads of glamour. Actors Deepak and Archana were comperes for the evening, which began with actor Vineet’s performance to the classical song, Brahmam Okate. Meenakshi performed next amidst loud cheering. There were also performances by music-director Devi Sri Prasad, and actresses Archana, Kamna and Simran. What was arguably the most scintillating one hour of Filmfare 2006 began when Amitabh Bachchan, dressed in an immaculate black suit, walked in with son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya.

However, the icing on the cake was yet to come. The uncrowned king of Tollywood, Chiranjeevi, was called upon to receive the ‘Legend Award’ along with Mammootty, whose name, Tabu aptly described as “synonymous with Malayalam cinema.” And as Amitabh came on stage to do the honours, the audience was in raptures. Rounding up the glamour quotient on stage were Abhiash, as they presented the best actor award for Malayalam films to Mammootty.
