Where have you been of late?
Working like crazy, completing three films. I hope to work some day with Shimit Amin, Kabir Kaushik and Shoojit Sircar. If you ask me, there’s no point in doing inane roles at this point of my career.
But for an actor, isn’t out of sight out of mind?
At this stage, I’m not blowing my trumpet please. For a guy who does character roles, I’m riding my own wave. Besides Hindi, I’m also into Tamil and Telugu films. I’ve just bought another flat in Versova. In terms of work and money, I’m doing just fine, thank you very much.
Did you take up films in the south because of the money?
I earn money in Mumbai also. It’s just that I’m balancing my career. So what if I’m not seen in promos, every two months? It’s cool to be exclusive. Overexposure can kill. The south film industry is amazing. In fact, by working in different languages, I’ve become a better actor.
Are you rejecting villainous roles?
I’m very happy playing a villain if the role make sense. I don’t want to play a baddie with wide eyes, flaring nostrils and popping veins.With due respect to my seniors, I can’t play a villain like they did in the ’70s and ’80s. I’ve done 14 Hindi films so far, and I know I can’t do the same old stuff anymore. I want to play negative roles like the ones in Ram Gopal Varma’s movies. There is so much subtlety in them. And I’d love to do Jack Nicholson’s role in Batman which even wowed kids.
What happened to your TV show Games Bond?
It did very badly. It was my first foray into TV. I shot for eight days and I realised it was very demanding. The set was lavish, I was on a very popular channel but there was too much confusion. Even though I was the host, I couldn’t fathom the games myself. Also it was for a very niche computer buff audience, inspired by an American TV show but life is different here. Forget the fact that no one understood the show. More to the point there was no prize money, no nothing.
